Overwatch 2: To Earn One Legendary Skin Requires Over 8 Months of Challenge Grind

With Overwatch 2 going the free-to-play route, Blizzard Entertainment has to find a new money source since they’re giving the game away for free. Understandably, the studio went to the Battle Pass route alongside selling items in the in-game store. However, it seems if you want to earn an Overwatch 2 Legendary skin just by playing, it’ll take you a very long time.

Checking the in-game store, if you want to obtain a Legendary skin (not a Legendary Bundle but just a skin), just by playing, you’ll need to spend over eight months (over 31 weeks) of grinding the Weekly Challenges! Don’t believe me? Check out the cost of one Legendary skin for Widowmaker that’s now available in the in-game store:

You can clearly see that it costs 1,900 Overwatch 2 Coins. Completing the Weekly Challenges will net you a max of 60 Overwatch Coins per week. So, if you do the math: 1,900 ÷ 60, you’ll get 31.6 (weeks). Mind, there should be in-game events and the premium (read: paid) Battle Pass tiers that can net you more Overwatch Coins, but even so, that won’t shave off enough time to make grinding for these worth it.

For reference, Epic skins (1,000 OC) will take you 17 weeks to grind, while Rare ones (300 OC) are “just” five weeks worth of grinding. Mind, when Blizzard explained  how the Battle Pass system worked, they didn’t mention this at all. Given the game is F2P, it looks like this the way Blizzard and Activision will earn money from the game. It’s debatable whether this is the less offensive way or just selling the game at full price. I mean, these are just cosmetics after all, but given how big of a factor these play into the game’s progression, I wouldn’t be surprised to see players get irritated by it.

In other Overwatch 2 news, Blizzard has pushed out a list of known issues that are plaguing players, though hopefully a lot of them have been resolved by now.

Thanks, NerosCinema!
