The Nintendo Switch is on track to become the best-selling console in US history, with the potential to surpass the PlayStation 2.

According to Mat Piscatella from Circana, the Switch is only 1.1 million units away from surpassing the PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales in the United States. The PS2, which has held the top spot for years, might soon be dethroned by Nintendo Switch.

The Switch’s success story began in 2017, and since then, it has sold over 143 million units globally. Despite a slowdown in sales this year, the console remains a favorite among gamers. The Switch’s diverse game library and unique hybrid design have contributed to its widespread appeal.

Piscatella also noted that the console market is still thriving. He highlighted that “PS5 sales are 7% ahead of the PS4 in the same period” and that Xbox Series X|S sales are keeping pace with the Xbox 360. This indicates a robust demand for gaming consoles despite economic challenges.

Nintendo’s journey is not over yet. They aim to sell 13.5 million Switch consoles by the end of their fiscal year in March 2025. Achieving this target would bring the Switch’s total sales to 154.4 million units, just shy of the PS2’s global record of 155 million units.

Moreover, the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected by next year, potentially boosting sales further.
