During the PS5 Pro presentation, Sony hinted that owners of the mid-gen console would finally enjoy maximum performance and the best graphics settings, without needing to choose between Quality and Performance modes. It seemed that the dream of 60fps had come true, free of the compromises in graphics and resolution present on the standard PS5.

However, The Verge’s Tom Warren has noted that not all games optimized for PS5 Pro will hit 60fps. Warren explained that developers will have the flexibility to choose how they optimize their titles. He clarified that there will be no obligation for games to run at 60fps on PS5 Pro, as some may prioritize higher resolution or ray tracing instead.

Warren explained:

Developers have the option of increasing the target resolution for PS5 Pro games that run at a fixed resolution on PS5 or even increasing the target maximum resolution for games that run at a variable resolution on PS5.

Warren also mentioned that developers could enable ray-tracing effects and still earn the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label without improving resolution or frame rates. Alternatively, targeting 60fps instead of 30fps at the same resolution would also qualify. Additionally, a fixed resolution increase from 1440p to 2160p would also qualify for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.

While the PS5 Pro offers enhanced hardware capabilities, developers will ultimately have the final say on how they utilize the hardware to optimize their games.
