Report: PlayStation Handheld in Early Development, Features AMD APU and PS4/PS5 Compatibility

A new PlayStation handheld is reportedly in very early stages of development. The device is set to feature a custom AMD APU and will reportedly be designed to run PS4 and perhaps even PS5 games.

This news comes from the YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, a page known for touching in-depth on tech news and rumors. You can view the video about the new PlayStation Handheld below:

Around 13 and a half minutes in, Moore’s Law is Dead began presenting a leak about what he referred to as the “Vita 2,” a work-in-progress PlayStation handheld device that is in very early production. According to him, the console is at least two years out and not currently greenlit for launch as of yet.

The console will reportedly feature 18 CUs in order to properly run PS4 titles. Additionally, it’s intended to run patched-down versions of PS5 titles that will be stripped back or optimized to run on handheld hardware. The PS5 selection would reportedly be smaller, as not all of the console’s titles could be expected to run correctly on a handheld.

Moore’s Law is Dead also reported that it’s been suggested to him that the console may be intended to launch within the PlayStation 6 family of devices. If that’s the case, its release would likely be years and years off, considering we’ve yet to even see a PS5 Pro model release.

We haven’t seen a proper Sony handheld in years. After the middling success of the Vita, the company seemed to give up on handhelds entirely and focus purely on their home console line. The closest thing we’ve gotten as of late is the PlayStation Portal, which is more of a streaming device than anything.

Are you excited about the prospect of a new PlayStation handheld? Let us know down in the comments.

Thanks to Moore’s Law is Dead for the report!

If the rumours and speculation are more then just hearsay then i’d gladly purchase a Vita 2. After the success of the Vita and Nintendo Switch, i think Sony would regret not releasing a PlayStation Vita successor.
