Resident Evil Requiem Development Began Before Village; Dev Explains Why the Multiplayer Version Was Scrapped

Resident Evil Requiem, the next main entry in Capcom’s long-running horror franchise, was once planned to include a multiplayer mode.

However, that idea didn’t make it to the final version, and the game’s producer has now shared why the mode was cancelled while also revealing that the project has been in development for more than six years.

Resident Evil Requiem Began Development Long Before Resident Evil Village

In an interview with Press Start Australia, Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa said, “Looking back, I understand how Resident Evil 4 and Village became more action-heavy. Yes, that we have to admit. Looking back at the feedback, we understand how fans prefer more horror.”

He added, “Requiem was in development way before Village. We just wanted to make sure in this game, we wanted to focus on the horror and horror be the main part.” When asked how long the project has been underway, Kumazawa said it’s been around six years since the original concept.

Kumazawa also talked about why the multiplayer version was cancelled. The team felt that fans mainly want survival horror and the feeling of being scared. He said that you can’t just “slap on new skins and new characters” and expect it to feel fresh, because that would not be a good experience. For that reason, the team decided to avoid a multiplayer version and instead add new elements that make Requiem feel like a true new survival horror game.

He concluded by making it clear that long-time fans will enjoy the game, but new players can still start with Requiem without needing to play the previous entries.

In other Resident Evil news, we managed to unearth details on the Resident Evil 0 remake, which has yet to be formally announced by Capcom. We also got some early hands-on time with Requiem, and it’s shaping up to be one of the scariest entries ever.

Resident Evil Requiem will launch on February 27, 2026, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

To be able to enjoy the story and game with someone else makes any game that much enjoyable. RE5 6 and Outbreaks were awesome because of this. Too bad. Im sure the game will still be awesome either way. People complaining about too much action is just wild… If you dont like action go play something else because obviously you dont know anything about the characters you play as in RE. Nothing wrong with mixing horror with action. Fan input should not dictate the outcome of any game.
