Capcom Says the End of Physical Games Won’t Have a “Significant Impact” as 90% of Its Sales Are Digital
In recent years, Capcom has been one of the few AAA game companies to continue releasing true physical editions. In other words, its games on disc can be played on PlayStation or Xbox without downloading extra content or requiring an internet connection.
For example, both Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem can be played on Xbox Series X without an internet connection or additional downloads.
Despite continuing to support complete physical releases, Capcom believes the end of physical PlayStation games will have little impact on its business.
Capcom Says 90% of Its Game Sales Are Already Digital

During a Q&A session with shareholders covering the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Capcom was asked about the long-term impact of the shrinking physical game market following Sony’s decision to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs in January 2028.
In response, the company said it does not expect the change to have a major impact on its business, as around 90% of its total game sales already come from digital purchases.
Capcom stated, “Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time.”
In short, Capcom does not see Sony’s decision to stop producing PlayStation discs as a major problem because most of its sales already come from digital platforms, both on PC, which remains its largest market, and on consoles.
In other news, Capcom has confirmed that it is using generative AI in game development, but only for routine tasks like error checking, research, and data analysis.
