While there hasn’t been an entirely new StarCraft game since StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty was released way back in 2010, things could be changing in the near future.

A new rumor has surfaced stating that Blizzard Entertainment is seeking to revive the IP, though it won’t do it alone.

Said to be aiding in the game’s revival is none other than Nexon — yes, the same Nexon who recently published the extraction shooter hit, ARC Raiders.

StarCraft Revival Won’t Be a Strategy Game

The rumor comes from the Korean publication m.dnews, which claims that Blizzard is partnering with Nexon to revive the StarCraft IP, and it won’t be back as a traditional real-time strategy game, as the first two games were in the series. It’s said that Nexon has begun development of new games using the StacCraft brand, and the company has created a “separate organization” dedicated to recruiting key talents for the project.

The untitled project is said to have been started at Nexon’s Shooting Division, which is in charge of the game Sudden Attack. The report mentions this leads them to believe the StarCraft revival is being reborn as a first- or third-person shooter rather than a strategy title.

For those unfamiliar with the brand’s troubled development history, Blizzard cancelled a first-person shooter based on the StarCraft brand seven years ago, and this was to pour more focus into Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4.

The publication said that Blizzard remained mum when asked about this supposed project.

Needless to say, this is all unconfirmed stuff, so best to take it with a grain of salt for now. That said, Blizzard partnering with Nexon does make sense, given the latter is the no.1 video game developer and publisher in Korea. And we all know how big StarCraft is in Korea.
