Original Saints Row Director Working on Prequel Pitch to Bring the Series Back to Its Roots
The Saints Row series is beloved by many, but its most recent game failed to find an audience, leaving the franchise seemingly dead. Still, there may be hope for a comeback if the game’s design director can make his plans happen.
Chris Stockman, who worked on the first Saints Row as a director, shared that he’s now working on a new pitch for another Saints Row game.
Saints Row Could Return with a Prequel True to Its Roots

In a post on Reddit, Stockman shared that he had been contacted to create a pitch that, if approved, could become a prequel. “I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row reboot! I can’t say anything more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams!,” he said, adding that it will not be a virtual reality title.
In a response to questions from PCGamesN, Stockman mentioned that he is “attempting to get the band back together” to work on the project. “I want to bring the Saints Row franchise back to its roots. As you know I directed Saints Row 1 and I feel the series has strayed way too far away from that. I completely understand why they went that way but in the end they kind of painted themselves into a corner they couldn’t get out of,” he explained.
It’s important to note that it’s still too early to celebrate — at this point, Stockman is only preparing a pitch. There is no guarantee that it will be approved or turned into a full game. Even if it does get the green light, it would take several years before release.
Finally, it’s worth noting that the original development studio, Volition, was shut down as part of a major restructuring by the Embracer Group.
While Saints Row is still only at the proposal stage, with Chris Stockman hoping to bring the series back to its roots, the biggest open-world game coming soon is Grand Theft Auto VI. It will release on May 26, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with character bios, new locations, and many other details already revealed.

The opening needs to be a Borderlands style intro but with the vehicle smashing into and killing all the stupid kids from the last game. Open the doors and see Johnny Gat was driving. Then all the classic tough guy gangsters from 1 and 2 step off the bus.
No more lame kids, bring back classic SR with more gritty and visceral designs closer to the first 2 games. 3 and 4 were fun, but went too goofy.
