Sony Refutes Report of Decreased PSVR2 Production

Sony’s PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) headset is set to launch in less than a month on February 22, and while a recent report claimed that Sony predicted fewer shipments of the headset within its first year, an update revealed that the company states otherwise.

The original forecast report, which was published by Bloomberg, mentioned that shipments would decrease from 2 million units to 1 million during its launch quarter, with an expected total shipment count of 1.5 million units from its launch date through March of next year. This is a substantial decrease from the original forecast, and the article claims multiple reasons for this, such as “lackluster demand” for VR headsets and the PSVR2’s niche compatibility and high price point compared to frontrunners like Meta’s Quest devices.

A recent statement has been given by Sony, however. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Sony told the news outlet that it has “not cut PlayStation VR2 production numbers.” The statement also goes on to say that the company is “seeing enthusiasm from PlayStation fans for the upcoming launch, which includes more than 30 titles such as Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Call of the Mountain, and Resident Evil Village.” For context, the PSVR2 will launch with multiple titles, giving owners plenty of games to choose from.

Until the dust settles in the weeks following the PSVR2’s launch, we won’t know for certain if Sony’s investment in the next generation of console VR pays off.
