Aside from the various games that are currently on sale via the PlayStation Store, US owners of the console can also avail of a PlayStation Plus sale for Extra and Premium tiers until January 13. But there’s a catch—the deal actually isn’t available for existing PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The discount is pretty big, too, with a flat $40 off a 12-month subscription and a $15 discount if it’s just for three months. 12-month subscriptions offer the best bang for your buck, saving you quite a bit of money compared to renewing your subscription every single month. Top that off with a $40 flat discount, and you’re getting a really good deal—that is, if you don’t already have a subscription active.

Needless to say, the promotion will probably rub PlayStation owners the wrong way, especially those who already have an existing subscription. The Extra and Premium tiers are far more expensive than the base Essential tier, and while you do get extra perks and value from the subscription, it’ll still burn a hole in your wallet, especially for Premium users.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can really do if you’re an existing subscriber but wait for a sale that doesn’t require new membership. If you don’t have a subscription yet, however, then head on over here to grab that 12-month discount before January 13.
