Sony Updates PS5 Disc Drive Store Listing to Add a Disclaimer
In case you haven’t heard, Sony rocked the entire gaming industry this week when the company announced it is ending physical disc production for new games starting in January 2028.
As one might expect, this was met with negative reaction from literally all corners of the internet.
While the PS6 might not have a disc drive of any kind, the current PlayStation console we have now, the PS5, still has one, and it seems Sony has updated the store listing for it recently because of recent events.
PS5 Disc Drive Receives “Important Notice” About Physical Discs and the Future
If you check the PlayStation Direct store link for the PS5 disc drive, you’ll see the item has been updated with an “important notice” that states, “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
The listing also says that “Due to high demand, there is a limit of 1 per order.”
Mind, the PS5 disc drive has sold out before, but this is happening now, and Sony’s digital-future push seems to have led people to buy a disc drive while they still can.
For those hoping Sony reverses its decision, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards, as the digital transition has been decided for “some time,” and even their disc manufacturing centers are switching production of optical microlenses.
If you’re looking to buy some physical games now before Sony yanks them all, you best better get a move on with the disc drive, as I gather these things will be selling out a lot more than before.
Speaking of digital games, the first PlayStation Store sale of the month is live, and we have the entire list of discounts available.
