Splinter Cell Remake Will Rework Original Story for “Modern Audiences”

Fans of the legendary Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell stealth action franchise will be pleased to know that the Splinter Cell remake aims to rework and update the original story for modern-day audiences, while staying faithful to the themes of the 2002 classic.

Since the initial announcement back in December of last year, Ubisoft has not said much about the upcoming Splinter Cell remake project.

While the publisher has remained mum on the game, new details have surfaced, as a new scriptwriter job listing for the project at Ubisoft Toronto has revealed significant details about the scope and goals of the Splinter Cell remake.

The listing reads:

Using the first Splinter Cell game as our foundation we are rewriting and updating the story for a modern-day audience. We want to keep the spirit and themes of the original game while exploring our characters and the world to make them more authentic and believable.

The listing also reveals that the remake will be built in Ubisoft’s Snowdrop Engine to ensure a cutting-edge visual and stealth gameplay experience.

Ubisoft Snowdrop is the same engine that has previously powered Ubisoft’s The Division franchise.

Interestingly, while the remake has been confirmed to be a linear experience, the listing says that “experience with a non-linear narrative structure” is preferred. This may mean that the remake could feature multiple, non-chronological plot lines, or even an in medias res experience with flashbacks as a plot device.

It’s certainly been a long wait for Splinter Cell fans. The last installment in the franchise, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was released in 2013, for the seventh generation of video game consoles. Since then, Sam Fisher and his trifocal goggles have only made cameo appearances in DLC for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

We still have no word on a release date, though the listing confirms work is under way on the remake. We’ll let our readers know as we find out more about the project.
