Star Wars Outlaws Has Highest Marketing Budget for a Ubisoft Game Ever; Expects a Strong Launch Due to “Strong Positive Community Sentiment”

It should come as no surprise, seeing how massive the Star Wars IP is, that Ubisoft is pumping loads into the marketing for their upcoming title, Star Wars Outlaws. Despite having several other successful, established franchises under their belt and this being their first Star Wars game, Ubisoft doesn’t plan to let the franchise’s popularity go to waste, as they’ve confirmed that Star Wars Outlaw holds the highest marketing budget for any game released by them thus far. 

This was confirmed in their recent quarterly earnings call Q&A by Ubisoft’s current CEO, Yves Guillemot. When asked to expand further on the guidance the publisher had set for the upcoming quarter and how it seemed the publisher set a lower expectation for Star Wars Outlaw than what investors were hoping for (per Nick Dempsey of Barclays, he calculated roughly five million units sold based on Ubisoft’s guidance) and if Ubisoft was being conservative in their guidance, here’s what Guillemot had to say. 

What we are factoring in is a strong launch for Star Wars Outlaw. That’s the fact that it’s among the most awaited game of the industry this year and reflecting a really strong positive community sentiment, and also the fact that we are coming with the biggest marketing campaign ever so far for a Ubisoft game.”

He goes on to explain other factors, such as holiday sales and post-launch content, not only for Outlaws but from Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Rainbow Six Siege, and other Ubisoft titles that will contribute to their revenue for the upcoming quarter while also trying to set some more realistic expectations. One of those expectations came in a follow-up question if Ubisoft anticipates Assassin’s Creed Shadows to be their highest earner in the series, but he simply replied that the publisher expects it to be up there with the top earners in the series.
