Steam Deck Sales Reportedly Dropped More Than 80% After the Price Increase
We all knew that the Steam Deck price increase would have consequences, and now new estimates suggest the impact has been even bigger than expected.
In May, Valve increased the price of the 512 GB Steam Deck from $549 to $789, while the 1 TB model went from $649 to $949, representing price hikes of 44% and 46%, respectively.
As expected, those higher prices appear to have hurt demand.
Steam Deck Sales Reportedly Collapse After Price Increase
According to estimates published by Boiling Steam, Steam Deck sales have dropped by 82% since the price changes were introduced.
To reach this estimate, the outlet analyzed Steam revenue rankings, average selling price, and the sales split between different Steam Deck models. It also relied on data from SteamDB, which showed the handheld steadily losing its position on Steam’s top-sellers list.
Boiling Steam estimates that when the Steam Deck ranked fourth or fifth on Steam, it generated between $6 million and $10 million in weekly revenue. With its current position between 10th and 15th place, weekly revenue is estimated to be between $1.2 million and $2.5 million.
Based on those figures, the study estimates that Steam Deck weekly sales were previously between 11,000 and 18,000 units. Since the price increase, that number is believed to have dropped to between 1,400 and 3,000 units per week, representing an estimated decline of 82%.
In other news, Valve says it is “hard at work” on Steam Deck 2, but the company wants a much bigger performance leap before announcing a release date.
