Valve is already working on Steam Deck 2, but if you’re waiting for a release date, you’ll need a little more patience.

The company has already confirmed that Steam Deck 2 is part of its future plans, along with other devices like Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Still, Valve appears to be moving step by step and wants to make sure everything is ready before announcing launch dates.

Steam Deck 2 Is Coming, But Fans Will Have to Wait Longer

Speaking to IGN, Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve programmer, shared details about Steam Deck 2. Griffais said that Valve is “making sure that it’s a worthwhile enough performance upgrade to make sense as a standalone product.”

He explained, “We’re hard at work on it. And obviously every step of the way, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to Steam Deck, to everything that we’re announcing and shipping this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 will be a lot of the same where a lot of what we’re doing here will be learnings that build up to it”

According to him, many of the devices Valve is working on now will also help with the development of Steam Deck 2. Even though he could not confirm a release date, he did explain what Valve wants from the new hardware. “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50% more performance at the same battery life,” he said. “We want something a little bit more demarcated than that. So we’ve been working back from silicon advancements and architectural improvements, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what the next version of Steam Deck is going to be.”

At the same time, he admitted that reaching true next-generation performance is still a big challenge. Even with better chips and improved architecture, Valve feels that current technology is not yet strong enough to deliver the kind of major performance jump they want for Steam Deck 2.

For now, Steam Controller will be the first of Valve’s new hardware devices to launch, with its release set for May 4. After that, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and the new Steam Deck model are expected to follow, although fans may need to wait a little longer for those.

In other news, Playnix has introduced a new Steam Machine alternative with an RX 9060 XT GPU, Ryzen 5 5500 CPU, and 16GB RAM, priced at $1,139.
