Steam Machine Sets 1080p and 30 FPS Standard for Verified Games
The new Steam Machine was originally expected to launch earlier, but the global RAM memory crisis disrupted those plans. Valve has now delayed the release of the device to sometime in 2026, although another delay into 2027 has not been completely ruled out.
Even so, new official details continue to appear. During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, Valve explained the requirements games must meet in order to receive the Steam Machine Verified label. This certification is meant to guarantee that a game runs properly on the new hardware.
Steam Machine Reveals Requirements for Games to Receive the New Steam Machine Verified Label

According to Valve, the minimum target for verified titles will be native 1080p resolution with a stable frame rate of 30 frames per second.
This standard is lower than what many people expected earlier. When the device was first introduced, Valve spoke about experiences reaching 4K at 60 FPS, supported by upscaling technologies such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution.
During the technical presentation, Valve explained that the goal is to set a clear performance target for developers, even though the hardware itself will be capable of reaching higher performance levels in many cases.
Valve also confirmed that any game that already has the Steam Deck Verified label on Steam will automatically receive the Steam Machine Verified label. In other words, games designed to work well on Steam Deck already meet the accessibility and compatibility standards expected for Steam Machine.
The company estimates that the new hardware will deliver roughly six times the power of the Steam Deck. This increase in performance should allow higher resolutions or higher frame rates in many games. However, Valve acknowledged that the most demanding titles may still rely on aggressive upscaling techniques if they aim to reach 4K resolution and 60 FPS.
Valve also shared details about another project during the event. The company presented the requirements for Steam Frame VR, its standalone virtual reality headset, which will require 90 FPS in VR to ensure a comfortable experience.
As for the release date of Steam Machine, Valve joked about it during the event. The company said it would not announce the device during GDC 2026, unless “you have a line on a bunch of RAM.”
Even so, the new information suggests that the desktop system is getting closer to launch, which could happen sometime in the coming months.
In related news, the Steam Machine will be priced like a PC, not like consoles from Microsoft or Sony, according to a Valve spokesperson.

Yikes. Playing at 1080p or 30fps in 2026 is a joke.
Isn’t that the bare minimum for today’s standards?
Isn’t that the bare minimum for today’s standards?
So they’re backtracking and putting an older card, like a 2080S, in this thing and saying since it can run most games at 1080p 30fps it will be good enough to be called optimized for the Steam Machine?
This sounds like its going to cost $1000 and be less powerful than a regular PS5… If this thing runs modern games at only 1080p and 30fps, Valve will say it is a success and meets the requirements to be verified. Valve is really going downhill.
