Take-Two Mandate on Microtransactions: Over-Deliver on Content and the Monetization Will Follow

Take-two microtransactions

While almost every gaming company these days thrusts microtransactions into their games, it seems that for Take-Two Interactive, this is because they “over-deliver” in content.

This was mentioned by Karl Slatoff, President of Take-Two, in the company’s recent earnings call Q&A. When asked about the opportunity in unlocking monetization on PC, Slatoff comments, “So, we look at the PC platform as we do on every platform, and it all starts with content first and foremost. And we agree, it’s a very powerful platform we’ve got some very strong third-party partners and also the ability for us to sell directly to the consumers, so these are all very compelling things for us, and we’ll continue to develop on the PC platform as long as the gamers are there. Wherever the gamer is, that’s where we’re going to be. I don’t really us looking at PC monetization any differently than on any other platform. It’s really more about game to game. What works for certain games; what doesn’t work for certain games, and the overarching edict we have is: over-deliver on content, and the monetization will follow.”

For those playing games that fall under Take-Two (titles from 2K Games, Rockstar, etc.), are you happy with the amount of content these titles deliver in comparison to the microtransactions tied to them? I can’t speak for everyone, but I do know that some franchises that are owned by the company such as NBA 2K has been under fire from the community due to predatory monetization utilization.

In the same call, Take-Two also confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released in Fall 2025. Not only that, but GTA 5 and GTA Online’s engagement have even risen quite significantly compared to the previous year.
