Thanks to GTA 6 Foundation, Rockstar Promises Next Game Won’t Take as Long to Release
Grand Theft Auto 6 might be the most anticipated video game of all time, and part of the allure is how long gamers have waited for a sequel to GTA 5, a game that spanned two console generations and was initially released 13 years ago.
While gamers have waited more than a decade for a proper follow-up, Rockstar Games did release another title in between, and it’s none other than the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released in 2018.
Even if you factor Red Dead 2’s release, that’s still eight years between releases, which translates to one new game per console generation.
Thankfully, that might be the last time we’re going to wait this long for a Rockstar game release.
Thanks to GTA 6 Tech, Rockstar Will Be Able to Develop Games Much Faster
In a new feature on the making of GTA 6 by Bloomberg, Rockstar Games Head of Development Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut talked about the making of the sixth mainline entry in the best-selling franchise.
While GTA 6 took ages to make, the studio promises that thanks to the tech they’ve built and the team’s familiarity with one another, the devs promise their next project won’t take as long.
Part of the game’s “secret,” aside from its budget that seems unlimited, is the development team that’s been working together for decades. Garbut and Hooker mentioned that they’ve found success because they’ve been making games for many years and know how to get them released, stating, “The last 30 years has been practice for where we got to here. The team and us as individuals have been doing it for so long that there’s a sort of shared understanding, shared knowledge and a sort of shortcut to questions.”
Hooker chimes in as well, adding, “The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly, I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.”
Hooker concluded, “We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project,” Garbut says. “But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”
This is definitely good news. Mind, this isn’t confirmation that we’ll see GTA 7 released anytime soon, as Rockstar’s next project could very well be another Red Dead game — or something else entirely.
At the very least, gamers won’t have to wait 8-13 years for the next Rockstar Games opus to be conceived.
GTA 6 will be released on November 19 on the PS5 and PC, and a new rumor has surfaced stating that the PC version will be released in Q1 2027.
