Last week, Neon Giant, the studio behind the hit action-shooter RPG The Ascent, divulged details about its new game, which has the working codename Project Impact.

While details surrounding that game are scarce, MP1st managed to ask the studio during a media event about the in-development game.

Neon Giant’s Next Game Will Be a Huge Leap Compared to The Ascent

One of the questions we asked during the media session was regarding the studio’s penchant for using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

MP1st: The Ascent was built on Unreal Engine 4 and then Project Impact will utilize Unreal Engine 5. Is there a reason why you are still sticking with Unreal Engine instead of switching over to a different engine or is it just because it’s what you’re accustomed to?

Tor Frick Creative Director, Neon Giant, replied with, “We are definitely accustomed to Unreal. We have been working with Unreal for a long time. (A) Bunch of us have worked, you know, at Epic as well. We are very used to it, but we’re also power users of it. With Project Impact, it is a very ambitious step up from The Ascent. We do want to leverage the engine, as much as humanly possible.

It is a fantastic engine, and the possibilities of the stuff you can do now are pretty crazy. We are really looking forward to hopefully surprising people with a leap in ambition that product impact is compared to The Ascent.”

While Neon Giant isn’t ready to talk about Project Impact just yet, we do know the game is a first-person open-world set in the fictional location of Port Desire (no connection to Puerto Deseado, Argentina), and that it’ll be in a cyberpunk setting. Currently, there’s no target release date or announced platforms for it, but I’d wager PC and current-gen consoles would be a good bet.

As for the studio’s debut game, The Ascent was released in 2021 on consoles and PC. It was a cyberpunk-themed acton-RPG presented from an isometric view overlooking the characters. It reviewed fairly well, and was considered a commercial success for the studio.
