zelda tears of the kingdom gone gold

Hylians, rejoice! Nintendo has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has gone gold (meaning development is complete and the game is ready for publishing) ahead of its release on May 12.

Six years into the release of Breath of the Wild, Zelda fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of its sequel. It appears that the May 12 release date announced at the September Nintendo Direct will be pushed no further, according to series producer Eiji Aonuma:

Development on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now complete. Thank you very much for waiting.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom carries over and expands the Hyrule setting of Breath of the Wild, and follows Link and the titular Zelda as they take on a malevolent force that seeks the destruction of Hyrule. Aonuma also played through over 10 minutes of the game today to showcase Link’s powerful new Recall, Fuse, Ascend, and Ultrahand abilities, with Nintendo revealing a special Tears of the Kingdom-themed Switch OLED as well as a Pro Controller and Carrying Case afterwards.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released this May 12 on the Nintendo Switch.
