Ubisoft Sells Rights to Five of Its Dormant IPs to Atari

With French publisher Ubisoft not really in the best of spots right now, the company seems to be selling off some of its assets, and the buyer is none other than Atari. The news just broke today that Ubisoft is looking to revive some of its classic games through a newly announced strategic IP agreement with Atari, which will obtain the rights to five classic Ubisoft IPs.

The hope is to make them available on new platforms, and before anyone reacts violently, these are IPs you probably never heard about.

Two Gaming Icons Team Up to Revive Some Classic Titles

As announced by both Atari and Ubisoft (via press release), the two publishers have entered a strategic IP agreement that will see Atari bring the following classic titles to new platforms: Cold Fear (2005), I Am Alive (2012), Child of Eden (2011), Grow Home (2015), and Grow Up (2016).

These will all be re-released under Atari’s label, with opportunities to expand their reach through new formats, content, and extended distribution channels.

“Millions of players have experienced these worlds over the years, and this will open the door for long time players to revisit those memories while inviting new audiences to discover them for the first time,” said Deborah Papiernik, Vice President of New Business. “Atari has a rich gaming legacy and deep appreciation for these classic titles, we’re excited to see how they’ll evolve and connect with players in fresh, meaningful ways.”

“Ubisoft and Atari both have a legacy of crafting worlds that players can fall in love with — games that resonate with generations of players not just for how they played, but for how they made us feel,” said Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari. “We’re excited to reintroduce these titles while also exploring ways to expand and evolve these franchises.”

Probably not the titles that many were thinking, but it’s still great to see some of these hit classics making a return in some form. I loved Child of Eden, as well as Grow Home and Grow Up, and I’m eager to see how Atari plans to bring them back, along with the other mentioned games that I never had the chance to play.

Now the bigger question is, will it just be these ones for now, or could we potentially see more “agreements” made down the road that see other classic titles being remastered and such? I hope so, because Ubisoft has a lot of IPs that aren’t being used, and old games that aren’t playable on modern platforms.

In other Ubisoft news, the company has delayed some of its biggest games in development to ensure their quality meets expectations. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean it will be padded, as one former Assassin’s Creed dewv claims they were pressured to do.
