Wayfinder Monetization to Offer “Fair” Free-to-Play Model Based on Collaboration With Warframe Devs

One of the most common concerns that players have over free-to-play titles with Player versus Environment (PvE) elements is that some of them can favor players who use paid features in order to gain gameplay advantages over players who haven’t spent on the game. Fortunately, upcoming action RPG Wayfinder’s monetization will apparently keep things “fair” for players.

In a recent press event Q&A by Airship Syndicate which MP1st was a part of, the developers were asked about Digital Extremes’ involvement with Wayfinder outside of publishing the title. For context, Digital Extremes are the developers behind Warframe, another free-to-play action RPG that’s known for its fair free-to-play system. Here’s what CEO Joe Madureira and Design Director Steve Madureira had to say about the joint effort.

Q: How much input has Digital Extreme had on Wayfinder? This is their first, title being published under them that isn’t by them. Curious what kind of learning experience had been brought over from them.

Joe Madureira: Yeah, for sure! I mean I think we’ve really been like collaborative the entire way, you know, we discuss a lot of our high-level design ideas and then once they’re implemented, you know, there’s a lot of feedback that we get not only from people testing, but, but also like the fine folks at DE, they’re very experienced at making this kind of game. So, they often just give us a lot of stuff to think about that, that we may not have considered.

Steve Madureira: Yeah, it’s been super collaborative and especially the expertise on… (like the) free-to-play, because that’s new for us and they’ve been doing it for years. And yeah, avoiding pitfalls, like what works, what doesn’t, and what’s fair. Because fair is very important for us too. We don’t (want to) you know, like we’re exploiting people or trying to wring them money or anything like that.
