Western Digital Partners With Sony for Official PS5 SSD

Western Digital PS5 SSD

Western Digital has partnered with Sony to launch the first official PlayStation-licensed M.2 SSD for the PS5. The WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5 consoles will enable players to expand the storage capacity of their PS5 console. The storage drive has also been built from the ground up to take on the most intensive PS5 gameplay, which should satisfy all PS5 users.

The partnership was announced on Twitter.

Western Digital’s PS5 SSD is optimized for the latest generation console, and has been validated through multiple scenarios to ensure that it is fully ready for the PS5. The validation process was done with hundreds of hours spent testing some of the most graphic-rich games of different genres.

Vice president of Product Management at Western Digital, Susan Park had this to say about their partnership with Sony.

We’re excited for this new journey with Sony Interactive Entertainment and the opportunity to bring the officially licensed drive to PS5 gamers. Western Digital’s WD_BLACK brand was created to bring high-performance products to gamers everywhere. Combined with this innovative partnership, we aim to deepen our current commitment to developing storage solutions that enhance the gaming experience for all gamers.

The SSD will also let you store and play both PS5 and PS4 games directly from the drive. The drive’s attached heatsink also makes installation quicker with its all-in-one design. It will also cut down long load times because of the 7000MB/s read speed to get them in the game fast.

The WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5 is available for purchase for $169.99 (1TB) and $279.99 (2TB) on the Western Digital online store.
