Xbox Disc-to-Digital Announced; Early Access for Xbox Insiders Start on August 31
At the start of August, we reported that Microsoft could start Xbox’s rumored disc-to-digital program sometime this month. Today, that’s confirmed, as Microsoft has officially announced the feature.
Those who are part of the Xbox Insider program will be able to test it out on August 31 via early access.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced it officially on social media channels, as other execs chimed in about it too.
Xbox Disc-to-Digital About to Be a Reality Very Soon
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s announcement on X even included a short clip.
Your physical game library is more than a collection of discs. It holds years of memories and stories worth preserving. Starting next week, XBOX Insiders can unlock a digital entitlement for supported physical games. We’ll start with thousands of titles and add more as we can. pic.twitter.com/XATsa8sjBt

Xbox’s disc-to-digital initiative is something Microsoft is doing for game preservation, as well as preparing for the next-generation of Xbox consoles.
Jason Ronald, VP of Next-Generation at Xbox said, (per The Verge) “Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game.”
This digital entitlement (or ownership) is tied to a specific disc, and it will move from one account to another if you swap the disc to a friend or log in to a different Xbox profile and try to play a disc-based game.
While Xbox Insiders will be able to test this feature out on August 31, the broader rollout to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S console gamers will happen in the “coming months.”
Once a gamer has a digital version of an Xbox disc game, as long as the title supports the feature, players will be able to access the game on PC through Xbox Play Anywhere, or stream it to multiple devices with Xbox Cloud Gaming.
I have to admit, this is a cool feature, and one Sony should be keeping a close eye on. While the PlayStation brand is king right now, gamers are a fickle bunch, and Sony could see its stronghold challenged if a lot of gamers see this as the solution to the all-digital future they’re pushing. Aside from not having this feature available for PlayStation gamers, we also talked about Sony’s outdated PlayStation Store features and refund policy.
