Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital System Brings Back Delisted Games Like Deadpool and Transformers: Devastation
Xbox’s disc-to-digital system started testing with Xbox Insiders a few hours ago, and the first reactions are very, very positive.
There are still many physical games that aren’t compatible with the program. Sega, Bandai Namco and Square Enix have not added their games yet, but EA, Take-Two and Capcom are already part of it.
What’s surprising is that the new system also works with many games that were removed from digital stores years ago. Players who own these games on disc can get a digital version on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital System Revives Many Games That Were Removed From Digital Stores
X (formerly Twitter) user Nicholas Maguire tested Xbox’s disc-to-digital system and found that it also works with games that have been removed from digital stores.
It does not matter that they are no longer available to buy on the Xbox Store and other stores, because inserting their original discs immediately gives you the digital licenses. And, if these games support cloud gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere or handheld devices like the ROG Xbox Ally, players can also play them that way
“The new disc to digital feature on XBOX successfully gave me a digital license to a physical game that has been delisted digitally,” Nicholas said.
Some examples include Deadpool, Transformers: Devastation, Rock Band 4, Forza Horizon 2 and Forza Horizon 3. These games are no longer sold digitally, but players who own them on disc can now get a digital version
It’s also worth noting that this feature is currently in the testing phase, so it is not available to Xbox users who are not part of the Insider program.
In other news, Sony might reconsider its digital-only plans if Microsoft proceeds with a “100% physical” strategy for its next-gen Xbox.
