Just a week ago. we reported that the Battlefield V beta chat profanity filter censored words like “DLC” (but “free DLC” was fine), and “white man” for some unknown reason.
Well, now, we know what the reason is! Over on Twitter, DICE Multiplayer Producer David Sirland gave an explanation and blamed the AI learning algorithm since it tagged words that are known to be escalators to “toxic chat.”
Because the system is using a dictionary derived from several EA games based on some sort of AI learning algorithm that has tagged certain combinations of words to be escalators to toxic chat (or similar, I don’t claim to understand how it works in detail) – we will change this.
This is definitely good news, right? And it makes things much, much clearer.

Well let’s be honest. This happens all the time.
Remember when World of Warcraft censored the words “white supremacy”?
Or when League of Legends censored the words “down with men”?
Or when Rainbow Six censored the words “I hate all non whites?”
Oh right! That didn’t happen. Maybe DICE and EA are just spouting bullshit. YOU MADE THIS CENSOR BOT! How does it even censor something when this is the BETA and therefor censor something before it comes up in Toxic chats?
And even if that was the case, how do you explain that with something like DLC? How toxic can a chat be to the point you feel the need to censor “dlc” but not “free dlc”? That makes no sense and that goes for “white man” and black man” as well.
Or are you now suggesting that those who use the words “white man” are the more toxic players, causing this bot to censor those 2 words together?
No matter how you look at this thing, it reeks of suspicion. Either you chose these words because you felt it would be PC or you didn’t and this bot wasn’t tested once. Either way, it’s not looking good. Keep digging your grave EA and DICE. I’ll be sure to dance on it if it ever happens.

5yrs later…….. the censor-bot has gone even worse, now when you type almost any normal game related sentence (zero toxic words) some words still comes *****, even 🙂 is censored as *******
