COD: Ghosts Multiplayer – Underwater Gameplay a Possibility, No 64-Player Battles, SmartGlass Integration?

Activision CEO wants Call of Duty: Ghosts‘ multiplayer to stick to a winning formula, but the team hasn’t completely left out ideas like being able to battle underwater or using peripheral devices to add functionality.

New gameplay mechanics like vaulting, sliding, and leaning are being introduced in Ghosts, but what is Infinity Ward doing to innovate the multiplayer even further? More dynamic battlefields and player customization are two improvements the studio has detailed so far.

Speaking to GI, Eric Hirshberg revealed that Ghosts’ single player campaign will feature a level that takes place entirely underwater. “If you look at the trailer, there’s an entire level that takes place underwater,” he said. “We’ve had underwater scenes before where you scuba dive from here to there, but this is a whole new thing with underwater physics and underwater gameplay and underwater weapons.”

When asked if the team would be bringing any underwater gameplay to the multiplayer, Hirshberg teased, “hmmmm… We’ll have to wait and see.”

He was also asked if the multiplayer player-count would increase to numbers like 64 or 100, what with the power of next-generation hardware at the studio’s fingertips. According to Hirshberg’s response, it looks like Infinity Ward won’t be straying too far from the winning Call of Duty multiplayer formula already put in place. “I think Call of Duty is the best multiplayer game in the world,” he said. “It’s hard to argue with the number of people that play it every day and every month. We have a winning formula. We always innovate within that. We always find new ways to keep it fresh and new.”

Recent Call of Duty titles have only featured 12-player to 18-player (Ground War) battles.

Peripherals like Xbox’s SmarGlass may also become and integral part of Ghosts’ multiplayer experience. Hirsberg said, “you’re going to see us take [the added functionality] to a whole new level. A seamless second screen experience will be integral to next gen.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts launches on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on November 5. The game is also coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
