In recent years, more people have started buying digital games instead of physical copies. Because of this, physical game sales have continued to drop since 2022.

Now, Xbox could be working on a new system called “Positron” that may allow players to turn their physical Microsoft games into digital licenses.

This information comes from Windows Central journalist and insider Jez Corden. While talking about the video game market in China and games like Black Myth: Wukong, he also mentioned the Positron project.

According to Corden, based on the little information currently available, the system could work as a way to transform physical games into digital licenses.

There are still not many details about the project, and it is still unclear exactly what it is. Corden also said that “it might not be exactly as it seems right now.”

He believes the idea could make sense because he also expects Project Helix, to be a hybrid system between a PC and a console without a disc drive. Based on the clues he has seen, Corden claims that Microsoft’s next console could become a fully digital system.

“Perhaps this is the first step towards that kind of universe,” Corden said, although he also admitted he could be interpreting Positron incorrectly.

For now, we will have to wait for official details to understand what Positron really is and whether the next generation of consoles will become completely digital.

In other Xbox news, the company has yet to decide on console exclusivity of its first-party games, though it’s been said they are considering a range of options.
