Ex-Valve Writer Does Not Want to Work on Half-Life 3, Says It Would Be a “Nightmare”

Half-Life 3 may seem like one of the safest projects Valve could make. Fans have been waiting for the game for years, and releasing it would likely guarantee huge success.

However, according to former Valve writer Chet Faliszek, making the game is not as easy as many people think.

Faliszek worked on Half-Life 2, the Left 4 Dead games, Portal, and other Valve projects. Even though he is no longer connected to the company behind Steam, his comments are still helpful for getting an idea of how difficult it would be to create Half-Life 3.

As seen in a recent video, Faliszek replied to a user who said making Half-Life 3 would be very easy because the story could go in any direction. According to the writer, that is not true because some people are deeply obsessed with the game’s “lore,” while he personally prefers focusing on characters and their reactions in different moments.

He stated, “I almost never want to touch something that already has some kind of lore, or some kind of back history about it, not even like Left 4 Dead or anything. I don’t want to touch anything old. I don’t have to have people who remember stuff better than I do yelling at me about changing some history of lore from 50 years ago at this point.”

He explained that he absolutely does not want to work on Half-Life 3 or even Left 4 Dead because he does not want to be attacked by people who remember the lore of those games better than he does himself.

According to him, “any sequel to me is just a disaster nightmare that I never want to do. So I’m not going to.” He made it even clearer by saying he does not want anything to do with Half-Life anymore, adding: “I don’t want to touch that with a 10-foot pole. Or even a grav gun separating me from that 10-foot pole. A grav gun to a 10-foot pole, I wouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t do it with Dog’s arms.”

Faliszek also revealed that he once spoke with Bungie about a possible job offer, but their games are also strongly built around a very complex lore system, something he said “terrifies” him.

In other news, Valve nearly went bankrupt before launching Half-Life 2 and Steam due to a legal battle with Vivendi, but was saved by a summer intern.
