Report: Unannounced Metro Multiplayer Game Pulled from Saber Latam Amid Studio Layoffs
Back in 2024, a GamesIndustry interview with Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch accidentally revealed the existence of a Metro game focused solely on multiplayer. This mention was later removed from the article, but it revealed that development was underway at their Argentinian subsidiary, Nimble Giant Entertainment (later rebranded as Saber LATAM).
Now, according to a report from the Argentine gaming outlet PressOver, the future of this title set in the Metro universe is uncertain, as the project has been taken away from the hands of Saber LATAM. All of this is happening amidst recent management shake-ups and rounds of layoffs affecting the studio.
Metro Multiplayer Project Loses Studio After Years of Development
The publication elaborates on the troubled development of the title, claiming that work on it started nearly six years ago, reaching a peak team size of over 100 developers, with 60 remaining at the time of the shift in responsibilities.
Part of this long development cycle was reportedly caused by a clash of philosophies between the multiplayer component and the traditional Metro experience, something the studio was struggling to figure out.
As a result of losing the project, the division laid off 25 people, continuing a pattern of downsizing that had already been hitting the studio on a smaller scale. Saber LATAM offices located in Peru and Uruguay were affected as well, firing staff and shutting down just a few weeks ago.
Company management also saw major changes, with the recent departure of longtime CEO and co-founder Andrés Chilkowski. The role has passed to the current COO, Lucas Wall. Even though Wall didn’t explicitly mention the Metro project to PressOver, he confirmed that the studio had “lost a big project.”
But these aren’t the only hurdles the studio has faced, as their past releases have struggled to find an audience. In 2023, they released strategy title Star Trek: Infinite, but support would end just six months later. Before that, their time-travel multiplayer shooter Quantum League also struggled to hold onto an active player base.
While the current state of the project remains unknown, chances are that Saber will transfer this Metro to another developer and start from scratch. We certainly find it hard to believe the idea will be abandoned entirely, since the franchise is still thriving under 4A Games’ wing with the upcoming Metro 2039, and if there is one thing the gaming industry isn’t lacking, it’s live-service games.
