Future Call of Duty Will Be a “New Sub-Franchise;” Modern Warfare 4 Will Be “Epic Conclusion”
If you’re tired of alternating between the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series’ every year when it comes to Call of Duty,
While Call of Duty is still one of the biggest brands in all of gaming, it’s hard to deny that it’s lost some of its luster in recent years. If you asked your regular Call of Duty player why, there’s a big chance it could be fatigue on seeing the same sub-series every year. That will be changing soon, as Activision has confirmed a new sub-franchise will be part of the Call of Duty release rotation.
New Call of Duty Sub-Franchise Is Confirmed in the Works
Speaking in an interview, Activision Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl admitted that the “quick sequel” approach isn’t something players wanted. For reference, the publisher released Modern Warfare 2 in 2022, and that was soon followed by Modern Warfare 3, which was developed by Sledgehammer Games. After that, gamers saw the release of Black Ops 6 in 2024, and last year, we saw Black Ops 7.
Bahl admitted, “It was not something that our community was looking for,” and confirmed that new sub-franchise is in the cards, adding, “They wanted something fresh, and even though there were different time settings and ways to play the game with new features, that tonal shift is something that they were looking for. So, we’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork. But we’re really excited about Modern Warfare 4, and that addresses some of that feedback.”
The last Call of Duty game that was not connected to the Modern Warfare and Black Ops sub-franchise was Call of Duty: Vanguard, which was released in 2021 and was developed by Sledgehammer Games. Unfortunately, that entry underperformed commercially, and that was that for the spinoff.
New Modern Warfare Saga Is Coming to a Close
In the same interview, Bahl also confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will wrap things up for this sub-series of Modern Warfare games.
“I don’t want to give any spoilers, but this is going to be the epic conclusion of this recent series of Modern Warfare,” Bahl mentioned. “It’s not that some characters and pieces can’t live on beyond this and be reinvented. But we’re excited by closing this chapter and launching a new one.
Bahl continued by reiterating that they heard the player base and how they want something new. “Where we go with future games, we have to innovate. What we heard from the audience is they want new or better or different. The landscape is changing right under our feet. You’re seeing new games being built overnight, and you’re seeing tastes change and how people want to play,” the exec commented.
No word yet on what this new sub-franchise will be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this leans into more futuristic stuff.
With this reveal by Bahl, it seems this year’s Call of Duty campaign might be a must-play for those following the Modern Warfare saga. Will Activision off more familiar characters to give the series a proper send-off? We’ll know for sure when Modern Warfare 4 releases next week on October 23/
