With the launch of Season 5 of Battlefield 6 this week, DICE and the rest of the Battlefield Studios stable added new maps, weapons and more to the best-selling first-person shooter.

Unfortunately, that’s not all they added, as it seems some stealth changes have been made when it comes to progression.

The community was quick to call out the developers, whcih acted on it, but the damage has been done in a lot of gamers’ eyes.

Battlefield 6 Weapon XP Cap Was “Unintended,” Claims Devs

Battlefield 6 Update 1.000.031

When Season 5 kicked off, players noticed how their end-of-match score didn’t translate to total XP gained, which was how it worked when the game launched.

Upon investigation by the community, they noticed that there was a 300,000 XP cap on weapons (and it seems overall progression), which meant any XP earned over the cap vanished into thin air. At first, players said this XP cap only applied to Battlefield Portal, but upon further investigation and testing, it was shown to occur in base multiplayer as well.

Mere hours after this was spotted by the community, the developers issued a backend update to fix this, and a statement on how this was “unintended.”

The developers said, “Following the launch of Season 5, backend configuration changes resulted in an unintended issue affecting XP earn rates across modes and hardware progression (such as weapons). These backend changes have now been reverted, and our team is actively monitoring telemetry to ensure earn rates return to intended levels across all experiences.”

They finished by thanking players for their patience and reports while they “continue to track” this issue.

While I’m not typically cynical of how game developers communicate with the player base, this does seem very much as someone who got caught their hand in the cookie jar, and thought that no one would notice. But when players did, they just played it off as something of a bug? I don’t even know how a “backend configuration” can translate to an XP cap but hey, I’m not a developer, so what do I know, right?

Some players even think this move deserves a clapback for the devs in the form of a review bomb on Steam. I can’t say I agree with that completely, but the developers do need to be called out about it.

The good thing about this is it’s resolved now. The bad? It seems like EA or the developers will try to pull stunts like this when they think they can get away with it. Thankfully, the community is one persistent bunch, so I don’t think EA or the devs will be able to do this again without alerting anyone.

This isn’t the only thing that players got upset about regarding Battlefield 6’s Season 5, as it was only noticed that some of the new cosmetics were clearly made by AI, with hilarious results. However, it’s not all bad, as a new Easter egg has been added, and it even gives a reward.
