20 Years of Battlefield: Here’s Every Battlefield Game Released

In case you didn’t know, this month marks the 20th anniversary of the Battlefield franchise (September 10, to be more specific). It’s no small feat that a franchise is still alive and kicking after two decades, and with EA confirming that we’re going to see more Battlefield in the future, we here at MP1st decided to round up every Battlefield game released!

Included below are the dates when these titles were released, along with the developer, and a short description of the game itself. Note that mods and expansions aren’t included in the list; only the major entries.

20 Years of Battlefield – Every Battlefield Game Released:

Battlefield 1942 (2002)

Developer: DICE

The first installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE. It was released for PC in 2002 and was later made the AIAS and IGN Game of the Year. To celebrate the game’s ten year anniversary, it was made available for free on Origin in November 2012.

Battlefield: Vietnam (2004) 

Developer: DICE Canada

Battlefield Vietnam (also known as BFV) is the second installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by the now defunct DICE Canada and published by Electronic Arts. BF: Vietnam was released back in 2004 for PC.

The game was re-released in March 15, 2005 as Battlefield Vietnam: Redux. It featured recent patches for the game, as well as the new weapons, vehicles and maps that were included in the patches. It also came with the official World War II Mod.

Battlefield 2 (2004)

Developer: DICE

The third installment in the Battlefield series and was developed by DICE. It was released on June 21, 2005 in North America. The console port of the game, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, was released on October 24, 2005.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (2005)

Developer: DICE

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (also known as BF2:MC) is the fourth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by EA. It is a console spin-off of the critically acclaimed Battlefield 2 for the PC.

Battlefield 2142 (2006)

Developer: DICE

The fifth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts.

Official servers were shut down on June 30, 2014 during the mass GameSpy server closure by Glu Mobile that occurred that day. The game can still be played online through the Gameranger service and the community run Reclamation project.

Battlefield: Bad Company (2008)

Developer: DICE

Battlefield: Bad Company (also known as Bad Company 1, BFBC or BC1) is the sixth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game was highly anticipated, largely because it added realistic destruction to the game using the new Frostbite Engine. A sequel, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, was released in 2010.

Battlefield Heroes (2009)

Developer: DICE, Easy Studios

Battlefield Heroes (also known as BFH) is the seventh installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by both DICE and Easy Studios. It is the first game to be released in EA’s new “Play4Free” service, though players can spend money to buy weapons and customizations. It was developed to run on all kinds of computers so players with sub-par computers are able to enjoy the game.

It was announced that no new accounts would be able to be created for the game after April 15, 2015[1], and all servers were shutdown on July 14, 2015.[2] The game can currently be played online through the community run Phoenix Network and Rising Hub

Battlefield 1943 (2009)

Developer: DICE

The eighth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. On August 31, 2010, it was announced that Battlefield 1943 would be bundled with the Ultimate Edition of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (2010)

Developer: DICE

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (also known as Bad Company 2, BFBC2 or BC2) is the tenth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. It is the sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company and was praised by critics, many of which commended DICE’s work on the destructible environments, and its robust multiplayer component.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 iOS (2010)

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 iOS is an installment in the Battlefield Series and a mobile port of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The game borrows many elements from the console port and features similar gameplay. It was released for iOS for December 16, 2010. It was also released for Android and Kindle Fire.

The game has since been taken down from the iOS App Store and is no longer available for purchase. Despite this, however, the game is still available for the Kindle Fire.

Battlefield Online (2010)

Developer: Neowiz

Battlefield Online (Korean: 배틀필드 온라인) (also known as BFO) is the ninth installment in the Battlefield series and was published and developed by Neowiz with input from DICE and Electronic Arts. The open beta became available on March 25, 2010. According to the official website, support for the game ended on May 21, 2013 and the servers were shut down.

Battlefield Play4Free (2011)

Developer: DICE, Easy Studios

Battlefield Play4Free (also known as BFP4F) is the eleventh installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE and Easy Studios for free play.[1] It utilizes the Refractor 2 Engine used in earlier installments in the series, supporting 32 players online.

Battlefield Veterans were granted access to the open beta four days early on March 31, 2011.[2] Facebook and Twitter fans were granted early access on April 2.[3]

It was announced that no new accounts would be created for the game on April 15, 2015[4], and all servers were shutdown on July 14, 2015.[5] The game can currently be played online through the community run Phoenix Network.

Battlefield 3 (2011)

The twelfth installment in the Battlefield Series and was developed by DICE. It is the sequel to Battlefield 2 and was released on October 25, 2011 for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Battlefield 4 (2013)

The thirteenth installment in the Battlefield Series developed by DICE and published by EA. It is the sequel to Battlefield 3 and was released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 29, 2013. It is the first game in the franchise also released on eighth generation consoles, being released for the PlayStation 4 on November 12, 2013 and the Xbox One on November 19 of the same year. Battlefield 4 is also available for unlimited play for EA Access members on the Xbox One as one of the service’s launch titles.

Battlefield Hardline (2015)

Battlefield Hardline (abbreviated as BFHL) is fourteenth installment in the Battlefield series, developed by Visceral Games in collaboration with DICE and published by EA. Battlefield Hardline is unique in the fact that it is police themed, focusing on the continual war on crime, rather than military conflicts depicted in all previous Battlefield installments.

Battlefield 1 (2017)

Developer: DICE

The game is set during World War I. It marks the first installment exclusive to eighth-generation consoles and was released worldwide on October 21, 2016.

Battlefield V (2018)

Developer: DICE

Battlefield V, also known as Battlefield 5, BFV or BF5 (development code-name ‘Casablanca’) is the sixteenth installment in the Battlefield Series developed by DICE and published by EA. The game brings the series back to its origins, being set during World War II. The open beta of the game was start on September 4th, 2018 for EA Access and Origin Access members and available worldwide on September 6th, 2018 until September 11th, 2018.[1] The game was released November 9th, 2018 for EA Access and Origin Access members, and November 15th, 2018, for owners of the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition. It was released worldwide on November 20th, 2018.[2]

Battlefield 2042 (2021)

The game was revealed on June 9th, 2021. The game released on November 12th, 2021 for EA Play members and those who purchased the Gold and Ultimate Edition. It was released worldwide on November 19th, 2021.
