Activision Monthly Active Users Down 13 Million Over Last Quarter; Blizzard Also Down 18 Million

Activision monthly active users

Despite strong showings in Activision Blizzard’s 2023 net revenue over last year, a recent financial report revealed that monthly active users for Activision are down 13 million over the previous quarter, with Blizzard similarly down 18 million monthly active users over the same period.

Here’s the full table of the numbers from 2022 to 2023:

Compared to last year’s quarter ending on December 31, 2022, Activision’s monthly active users now amount to 98 million from 111 million. Blizzard suffered a relatively larger drop from 45 million in 2022 to just 27 million on March 31, 2023.

Activision and Blizzard both have fairly high-profile titles under their belt. Activision is best known for its highly successful Call of Duty games, with Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 currently spearheading the franchise. Blizzard has quite a few diverse games as well, with Overwatch 2, World of Warcraft, and the Diablo franchise all owned by the company. It’s worth noting that Overwatch 2 also came out just last quarter as a free-to-play title. On the other hand, King, known for Candy Crush Saga, seems to be doing just fine, with an increase in monthly active users from 233 million last December 2022 to 243 million earlier this March.

Though Blizzard’s numbers seemed to have tanked by quite a bit, the upcoming release of Diablo 4 this June 6 should help increase monthly active users for the company during this quarter, which should end on June 30. Diablo 4’s having another beta weekend from May 12 to 14, which should drive even more interest in the title ahead of launch.

In case you missed it, Activision Blizzard’s acquisition deal with Microsoft was just recently blocked by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), with Bobby Kotick releasing a statement that this decision “is far from the final word.”
