Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra wanted to cut back on Diablo 4 microtransactions and reboot Overwatch, according to Jason Schreier’s new book. However, Ybarra left the company, which stopped him from moving forward with these plans, and Microsoft later acquired Blizzard.

According to Jason Schreier’s book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, where he shares details about the studio’s leadership and development plans, Ybarra wanted to reduce microtransactions in Diablo 4 and reboot Overwatch. However, these ideas were stopped after he left. Ybarra’s plan to move away from the live service model would have caused big changes for both games. But, his push for these changes made him unpopular with some Blizzard employees.

Diablo 4, despite its critical success, has faced backlash due to its high-priced microtransactions. Many players felt upset that they had to pay as much as $25 for cosmetic skins, especially after buying the game itself.  Ybarra wanted to lower these costs, but he left before anything could change. It is also reported that Diablo 4 made over $150 million in microtransactions alone, proving how much money the game brings in.

Overwatch had its own set of struggles. After the disappointing launch of Overwatch 2, Ybarra wanted to give the franchise a fresh start with a reboot. Schreier explains that while fans would have welcomed this move, it would have meant completely reworking key parts of the game, putting a lot of pressure on the developers.

Schreier’s book gives us a glimpse into what might have happened, but Ybarra’s departure prevented these plans from fully developing.

Diablo 4 recently got its biggest update a few days ago that coincided wit the release of its first story DLC, Vesel of Hatred. You can read our review of the expansion here.
