Battlefield 6 Is Ditching Last-Gen Consoles; EA Accidentally Confirms Release Date
With today’s official reveal of Battlefield 6, more info about the game is slowly coming out of the woodwork, and the latest development we’ve spotted should make a lot of Battlefield fans happy.
It seems the new Battlefield game won’t be releasing on last-gen platforms (PS4, Xbox One), based on info we’ve gleamed from the shooter’s official pages, even if EA hasn’t officially announced it.
Rejoice as Battlefield 6 Is Skipping Last-Gen Consoles
With today’s official reveal of Battlefield 6, publisher Electronic Arts has also launched the game’s platform pages, so gamers can wishlist the game. If you check the Battlefield 6 page on EA’s website, there is only an Xbox Series version mentioned, and no Xbox One, which confirms the game won’t be available for last-gen platforms.
I gather that this is news that should make many people happy. While this might mean fewer overall players, given it alienates the PS4, Xbox One player bases, the compromise the developers need to do in order to have the game run on last-gen platforms and remain at parity with the other versions so that no one is at a disadvantage isn’t worth it for a lot of players.
At least, this way, DICE and the other developers can push the game’s technical limits without needing to worry about making sure it runs on last-gen hardware, which in turn, gimps the game’s overall design.
This was evident in Battlefield 2042, where the maximum player count of each match varied from last-gen to current-gen platforms and PC., This fragmented the player base, as crossplay was only available to the same generational family (PS4 to Xbox One/PS5 to Xbox Series).
Not only that, but it seems the rumors were true, Battlefield 6 will be released this year on October 10. While EA hasn’t announced it, the reveal trailer’s final shot features a disclaimer stating that the shooter has in-game purchases (read: microtransactions).
If you type in the URL featured in the disclaimer, it takes you to a page on Battlefield 6’s Standard Edition (which has since been pulled down by EA), which states, “This promotional offer expires October 10, 2025. Code expires October 10, 2027.” Check out the image below (captured by Eurogamer):
With the multiplayer reveal set for July 31, it’s likely that most of our questions regarding the release will be answered there. I’m also happy to confirm that we got invited by EA to take part in the multiplayer event, which means you’ll see gameplay, impressions, and more from us.
Another thing to look forward to is the Battlefield 6 open beta, which EA confirmed earlier this week No date is tied to it yet, but once we know more, we’ll be sure to let our readers know.
