This surprising announcement came directly from Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who shared the news in a social media video. In the video, Pitchford expressed his excitement, explaining that everything was going smoothly in development, which led to the game being ready earlier than expected.
Pitchford said that the game is “awesome” and the team has been “cooking.” Aside from Pitchford, the official Borderlands account on X also confirmed the news, stating, “After careful consideration—along with a LOT of meetings, playtesting, and incredible development work—we have made the monumental decision to MOVE UP THE LAUNCH DATE OF BORDERLANDS 4 to SEPTEMBER 12.”
The release date announcement also revealed that a Borderlands 4 State of Play is set to air tomorrow, April 30, at 2 pm PT/5 pm ET/5 am HKT. We’re presuming more gameplay, the different editions that will be sold and perhaps the roadmap for the game will be part of the showcase.
This early release is a welcome surprise, but many speculate that the date shift may be linked to GTA 6. With GTA 6 expected to launch in late September or early October, Gearbox might have decided to move Borderlands 4’s release up to avoid being overshadowed by GTA 6.
In related news, The CEO of Gearbox Software has called for more positive and supportive messages for developers regarding Borderlands 4, stating that if fans want the best Borderlands experience, they should “cheer and root for us.”
Borderlands 4 will launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 version expected to release later in 2025.
