The French studio Sandfall Interactive was among the teams present at the Xbox Developer Direct, where they provided an in-depth look at Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and revealed its official release date: April 24, 2025. The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
During the event, the developers highlighted the game’s key features, including an emotional story, innovative gameplay inspired by classics, and a dark, original world to explore. The story has been in development for four years, featuring deeply conflicted characters and a narrative with dark, mature tones. Relationships among the characters will play a central role in the dramatic storytelling, though lighter moments will also be present.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Release Date Announced
The gameplay presentation showcased a captivating alternate version of Belle Epoque France. The storyline will involve not only the members of Expedition 33 but also unique characters from this strange world, some with special powers who will join the group and interact with it in various ways.
Combat will be turn-based, incorporating timing mechanics for button presses to enhance attack damage or reduce incoming damage. The developers revealed a skill tree for character and party customization, alongside several spectacular battle sequences. While the style draws from Japanese RPGs, it has a distinctly French flavor.
One of the standout features is the explorable 3D map, inspired by older Japanese RPGs like the early Final Fantasy games—an element now rarely seen in the genre.
The game will launch on Game Pass and support Xbox Play Anywhere, enabling gameplay across devices via Xbox Cloud. It will also feature cross-save and cross-progression.
