Dungeons & Dragons Publisher Cancels Several Video Game Projects

Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast has cancelled a number of upcoming video game projects in a move to significantly reduce its investment in the industry. “At least” five video games have been axed, along with an internal project codenamed “Jabberwocky” and two other external games.

Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast has owned the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property since 1997, and additionally created and publishes Magic: The Gathering. In recent years, efforts to expand into the video game industry have seen the company engage several gamemakers and create a number of subsidiary development studios, with mixed results as in the case of the 2021 Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance title. Following financial difficulties at Hasbro, however, the company is terminating several video game projects with a number of independent studios, including Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment.

Consequently, Wizards of the Coast has terminated “fewer than 15” employees involved with these titles, with the option to apply for different roles within the company. The future of the upcoming AAA Dungeons & Dragons title from the Dark Alliance developers Invoke Studios is unknown at this time.

Disappointed fans wishing for Dungeons & Dragons adventures in the video game format can still look forward to Baldur’s Gate 3, which launches in August this year.
