Final Fantasy 6 Remake Is a Common Request Among Square Enix Staff, FF7R Producer Confirms

It seems as though many Square Enix staff have been requesting a Final Fantasy 6 remake from executive members of the company, according to a recent dev discussion livestream. The livestream, which was hosted in celebration of the Final Fantasy franchise’s 35th anniversary, included a brief discussion on the potential of an FF6 remake.

Yoshinori Kitase, brand manager of the FF series and producer of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, revealed the eagerness of Square Enix staff to work on FF6. A tweet by Genki_JPN discussing the conversation provided an English translation of Kitase’s remarks.

I think FF6 Remake would be difficult. FF7 Remake is not yet finished so I am not able to think about it… But for FF6 there are many FF6 fans inside the company and they often ask me ‘when are we making 6?

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was also in the livestream, where he explained how making a remake for FF6 would be more difficult to do due to its pixel-based nature, resulting in more effort required to translate it into a 3D title. Sakaguchi also asked Kitase whether or not he could “release the remake sooner,” though Kitase replied that it would not be easy.

If you’re curious, you can find the livestream here (timestamped to the FF6 conversation), though there aren’t any English subs, so keep that in mind.

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth set for early 2024 (check out gameplay right here) and Final Fantasy 16 just around the corner with its June 22 launch date, Square Enix has no signs of slowing down with the FF franchise, and only time will tell if we’ll get an FF6 remake down the road.

Haven’t played the Final Fantasy pixel remasters but a FF6 remake sounds interesting. I’ve only ever played Final Fantasy 7-15, nothing from the pixel remasters.
