Games Media Personnel Debunk Claims of Concord’s $400 Million Budget

concord budget

With Concord crashing hard and loud, it’s been the talk of the video game industry the past few weeks, and it doesn’t seem like the chatter will stop anytime soon. Just yesterday, a rumor surfaced from former IGN games media journalist Colin Moriarty that Sony spent a whopping $400 million on Concord.

We here at MP1st, didn’t report on it, as that amount seems too absurd to be true. Now, we’re not saying Colin is lying or anything, but it wasn’t something we thought held much water, so we refrained from reporting on it. Now,  Christopher Dring, head of respected gaming publication GamesIndustry has debunked this claim:

Dring’s statement rings true — especially when it comes to above-the-line (ATL) marketing spend. For those not aware of what this means, this is the term used by companies when targeting a large audience, and this means ads on radio, TV, print media, magazines, billboards, online publications, etc. I mean, wasn’t one of the main headscratchers when it comes to Concord’s release is we really didn’t hear Sony market it much?

Adding further veracity to this $400M claim is Kotaku Senior Report Ethan Ganch who also mentions that this number is also not what they heard.

Obviously, all this chatter would end right away if Sony or someone at Firewalk revealed just how much the development budget is, but I highly doubt that’ll happen anytime soon.

There is another possibility of where that budget number came from. Sony had purchased Firewalk Studio for an undisclosed amount in 2023. There is a possibility that the budget that Colin heard was also taking into the amount spent on the studio. The purchase isn’t something that should be factored into the game’s budget, considering that cost to purchase the studio was, well, for the studio, but it is a possibility why that number is so high.

With Concord’s server shutdown this September 6, this marks an end to Firewalk’s debut game for Sony, and possibly the publisher’s biggest failure in PlayStation history. Based on Sony’s wording on it, it does seem like there is a chance the game can see a relaunch as a free-to-play game, though even with that, it still has an uphill climb given the stigma associated with the game’s brand.

Will we really know what happened with Concord’s development? Perhaps if people behind the game eventually talk, but until then, expect to hear rumors, reports and other insider knowledge seep out for us to digest.

This isn’t debunking anything dude. Colin’s info came from a source directly in Sony. These tweets are not mentioning anything relevant at all, and they don’t have the connections that Colin does. The information that he described is not some stuff he just made up. It is exactly what was told to him, from a person who came DIRECTLY to him only. So unless this person decided to give out false information, which I guess is possible (why though?), then nothing is debunked at all. Do better writing, this is embarrassing and exactly why Colin still puts people to shame.

So you take the word from an EX journalist and not the word of these other two journalists, because one confirms what you already wanted to believe and the others don’t…

Anyone can say “I talked to someone at Sony directly” and be completely made up, why? Because the lie sells. Clicks. That’s what they’re after. Concord is the thing to hate right now so they’re cashing in.

Let alone the fact that the account that reported this rumor has been consistently hating on Concord way before the “leak”

Why doesn’t he mention WHO at Sony it was? Exactly what position did they held? No names, just something to add some credibility?

Have some skepticism.

So you take the word from 2 establishment gaming journalists, where the current gaming media has proven time and time again they completely lack any kind of integrity and not the word of a veteran journalist actually interested in the truth instead of pushing an agenda, because one confirms what you already wanted to believe and the others don’t…?

How could you not see how easy it was to completely debunk your first point?

Why doesn’t he mention WHO at Sony it was?”

Are you being deliberately stupid? You think this anonymous source wants to risk his/her job and lively hood? You think Sony would allow this person to keep their job if they found out who it was?

Follow your own advice and have some skepticism and just stop and think for 2 seconds.

LMFAO a “source” directly at Sony LMFAO….A company that didn’t acquire FireWalk Studios until mid 2023 and the game was started in 2016….

PROTIP; When they were acquired by Sony in 2023 the game was finished, FireWalk was talking to publishers looking for a publisher for Concord….

LMFAO Sony spend zero dollars on development

I am so glad you shills are all fading into obscurity.
I am old enough to remember when people actually respected and were interested in gaming journalists opinions. Then all the ‘gamers’ were replaced with ‘journalists’ like you – fired up by your college professor to save the world by hating everything manly, fun, or NORMAL.
