God of War Ragnarok Debuts With Almost 23,000 Concurrent Players on Steam, 60% Fewer Than 2018’s God of War

God of War Ragnarok is finally available on PC, but the player interest seems low compared to the previous game. On release day, the game peaked at just under 23,000 concurrent players on Steam, compared to the 60,000 logged by God of War 2018 on its first day.

God of War Ragnarok debuted at the 63rd position in the list of most-played games on Steam, while God of War 2018 ranked at 22nd. The 2022 sequel drew in 22,967 concurrent players in the first hour but soon dropped to around 18,000 players.

One potential reason for the lower numbers is the mandatory PlayStation Network (PSN) account requirement, which has frustrated many players. Sony’s decision to impose PSN login requirements on all of its PC games has stirred criticism, especially since Helldivers 2 recently reversed its stance on mandatory PSN login. Though what’s strange here is, some people are able to play the game without logging into PSN.

God of War 2018 went on to reach almost 75,000 players over its launch weekend. Whether Ragnarok will also receive a weekend boost to approach the numbers of its predecessor, or maintain more modest figures, remains to be seen.

Here you can check out the top PlayStation games with their peak concurrent players on Steam:

  1. Helldivers 2 – 458,709 concurrent players
  2. God of War 2018 – 73,529 concurrent players
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered – 66,436 concurrent players
  4. Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut – 57,934 concurrent players
  5. Horizon Zero Dawn – 56,557 concurrent players
  6. Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition – 40,462 concurrent players
  7. The Last of Us: Part 1 – 36,496 concurrent players
  8. Days Gone – 27,450 concurrent players
  9. God of War Ragnarok – 22,967 concurrent players
  10. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 13,539 concurrent players

In the meantime, don’t miss our review of God of War Ragnarok, where we said, “The story is incredible, with rich, engaging dialogue. It’s easy to get lost in one of Mimir’s long, captivating tales.”  We’ll have a review of the PC version up on the site soon, as we got our review code a bit late.
