Helldivers 2 budget

It’s safe to say that Helldivers 2 is a bonafide hit for PlayStation and Arrowhead Game Studios, and an unexpected one at that. Thankfully, the devs doesn’t seem to have rushed the shooter, nor did Sony scrimp on its development budget, as Arrowhead’s boss has confirmed that Sony even doubled the game’s development budget.

This was confirmed by Arrowhead Studios Boss Johan Pilestedt in a recent developer presentation where he talked about the making of Helldivers 2, it’s success and more.

We had moving targets and moving targets is. It’s such a pitfall that’s easy to fall into. So in one, one of the reasons why we extended a project was that we made a really, really nice prototype of the game. And we agreed together with PlayStation that, you know what? If we just doubled the budget, it will be even better.

Being the greedy capitalist that I am, I of course said, yes, let’s do that. It sounds wonderful. And then many more decisions like that were made based on something that seemed good, but the proper consequences were not taken into consideration. What that means for building the game and organization. – Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead Game Studios boss

Well, it seems it’s money well spent, as the game has shattered records for Sony when it comes to a PlayStation game on PC, and to date, Helldivers 2 has sold well over 12 million copies, which I’m guessing is way over Sony’s initial estimates.

Speaking of Sony and Helldivers 2, the publisher initially wanted to mandate that all PC players create a PSN Store account in order to access the game, which understandably didn’t go over well with players. Just days after, Sony rescinded this order though it looks like the game cannot be purchased in certain countries because of this.
