Helldivers 2 Xbox Version Not Entirely Ruled Out, as Dev Says Sony and Phil Spencer Would Need to “Duke It Out”
Back in April, a rumor surfaced that Sony was in very early preliminary discussions to bring Arrowhead Game Studios’ highly successful Helldivers 2 to Xbox. While nothing has come of it just yet, someone on the dev team hasn’t ruled it out.
Over on the official Helldivers Discord channel, Community Manager Thomas Petersson, posting as “Twinbeard” answered a player who posted, “I just want reinforcements in the way of Xbox players. But that’s never gonna happen.”
Responding to that, Petersson states, “Who says it couldn’t? It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial/brand standpoint, it could. If Sony believes it won’t though, it won’t.”
Is Helldivers 2 Coming to Xbox?
Note that this isn’t a confirmation that Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox, nor is it being shot down. For now, the ball is entirely in Sony’s court, as I doubt Microsoft would say no to getting one of Sony’s most popular live service games — a genre that Sony badly wants to penetrate that they’ve lost millions upon millions by trying it with failed shooter Concord.
The big question here is: would Sony go for it? While I’d love for the electronics giant to play nice for once and have one of its most successful IPs appear on a competing platform, I just don’t see it happening for now. Perhaps if we see more big-name Xbox exclusives come to the PS5? At least one can hope.
Whatever the future holds for Helldivers 2’s availability on other platforms, Arrowhead has not been affected by it, as the studio has pumped out one patch after another. Case in point: the big 60-day planned update reached its culmination last week, though that’s not the last patch we’ll see for the game before the year is done.
Helldivers 2 is one fantastic game, and if you don’t own a PS5, you might want to get it for PC. You can read our review here to help you judge whether it’s a buy, but our own James Lara mentions, “Arrowhead Game Studios has crafted brilliant multiplayer, one that puts the players first above all else. It is mindless and addicting fun that calls back to that classic era of multiplayer games, where it wasn’t about how much you could nickel and dime someone but how much fun players could have.”
