Hideo Kojima Thinks AI Will Eventually Create Remakes and Sequels
Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator, Hideo Kojima, has always been both fascinated and cautious about artificial intelligence. He’s often spoken about the risk of losing artistic control, stressing that technology should help creators, not take over their positions.
This week, Kojima shared more of his thoughts at Brazil Game Show 2025, where he once again talked about how AI could shape the future of game development.
“I Think, in the Future, Remakes and Sequels Will Be Made by AI,” Says Kojima

In a new interview with Rolling Stone Brasil, Kojima shared his thoughts on the gaming industry’s growing dependence on sequels, remakes, and how AI could play a role in that trend.
“I’m often asked what I think about the gaming industry releasing so many sequels, but this isn’t exclusive to games,” Kojima explained. “Cinema does the same with remakes and reboots. Since these works are already well-known, it’s easier to produce them and attract investment. From a business perspective, there’s nothing wrong with that. But if the industry only does that, it’s dangerous. We need to keep creating new things.”
Kojima went on to make a bold prediction about AI’s role in this trend: “I think that, in the future, remakes and sequels will be made by AI.”
While Kojima believes AI will one day handle remakes and sequels, he doesn’t think it will replace human creativity. Instead, he sees it as a helpful partner that can take care of boring or repetitive tasks, giving creators more time to focus on their creative ideas and artistic vision.
Last year, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick also shared his view on AI. He said that he doesn’t believe AI will reduce employment or development costs, calling that idea the “stupidest thing” he’s ever heard. However, that opinion seems to contrast with the recent layoffs at Microsoft, where several employees were reportedly let go so AI could take over their roles.
In related news, about 20% of games released on Steam in 2025 have disclosed the use of generative AI, an 800% increase from the previous year.
