Battlefield 6 Winter Offensive Update Highlights

While many publishers are using artificial intelligence to cut costs and speed up production, some studios are taking a more cautious approach.

The team behind Battlefield has now shared how it views AI and how the technology was applied in Battlefield 6, showing that their approach is different from other game studios.

Battlefield 6 Uses AI Only in Early Development

Rebecka Coutaz, General Manager of DICE in Sweden and Criterion in the United Kingdom, told the BBC that generative AI will not be used in any part of Battlefield 6’s gameplay or in-game content.

Instead, AI is being used behind the scenes, primarily during the early stages of development. She explained that this gives developers “more time and more space to be creative.”

Describing the technology as “very seducing,” she added, “If we can break the magic with AI it will help us be more innovative and more creative.”

In addition, Criterion design director Fasahat “Fas” Salim shared a similar view, saying GenAI is “not anything to be scared of in our industry.” He explained that developers are used to working at the cutting edge of technology, where things keep changing. “It’s just a matter of how we can incorporate that productively into our workflows, how can we leverage that to take our games to the next level,” he said.

Battlefield 6 is one of EA’s most anticipated and high-stakes projects, especially after the disappointing launch of Battlefield 2042. The team’s goal is to deliver a game that fans will love, and so far, it seems to be on the right track, with critics praising its multiplayer, graphics, and sound design, and early reviews being mostly positive.

DICE has also released the day-one update for Battlefield 6, featuring over 200 fixes that show how the game has changed since the beta, though there are still a lot of issues left to fix, and this doesn’t even include any balance changes.
