Report: Horizon Live Service Game “Hunters Gathering” Being Rebooted After Negative Feedback

Remember Horizon: Hunters Gathering? The multiplayer live service game set in the Horizon franchise that Sony announced quite some time ago? No? If not, I don’t blame you, as the game completely dropped off the radar after its initial reveal.

As it turns out, there’s a reason for that, as it’s another live service title that Sony is not feeling confident about.

The latest report about the title doesn’t paint it in a good light, and it seems Sony isn’t happy with it either.

Horizon Hunters Gathering Dropping Live Service Elements

The new report about the game comes from the ever-reliable Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, who states Sony is overhauling the game after negative feedback from playtesters.

According to people familiar with the company’s plans, Guerrilla Games has been working on the reboot since June. Following poor feedback from private playtests earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional co-operative multiplayer game with a story and a far smaller scope.

While that doesn’t sound well for the game, there is one glimmer of hope that the title isn’t canceled. However, the studio told staff in a meeting on Wednesday that they will have through December to “impress executives with their next milestone.”

Many of the devs on Horizon Hunters Gathering will be reassigned to a different project that will also be evaluated at the end of the year.

While Sony has declined to comment on the report, Schreier’s reputation on these things have been unblemished, and as such, we have no reason to believe this report.

This puts another bad mark on Sony’s live-service ambitions, which saw Concord crash and burn, the cancellation of Bend Studios’ live-service project, and also the cancellation of the multiplayer God of War project.

Things haven’t been going well at Sony from a public perception standpoint, as the company continues its digital-only future. While things seem to be evening out when it comes to noise, we’re expecting it to kick up again as we get nearer the January 2028 target date.

Later this week, some gamers are pushing for a #PSBlackout movement so that they can be heard by Sony. We’ll let our readers know whether it works.

Should just be cancelled. Horizon games sell poorly anyways and this game looks horrible, even with live service junk included.
