Kojima’s Horror Game “OD” Has a System in Place to Allow People Too Scared to Continue

It’s been three years since Hideo Kojima’s horror game “OD” was officially announced, and info about it has been very scarce outside of knowing that Xbox will help in its development.

Today, that changes a fair bit, as not only do we see our first-ever screenshot of the upcoming horror game, but the first gameplay details have also made their way out.

First, the good news: filming has officially begun with the game’s actors, which means the game is not canceled or dead.

Kojima’s Horror OD Will Feature a Completely New Game System

Aside from the info, a screenshot of OD has been revealed, and it might remind people of another Kojima project. Check the screenshot out (via Entertainment Weekly’s Xboc feature);

The three main actors confirmed to be in Kojima’s OD include: Sophia Lillis (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and the late Udo Kier (Flesh for Frankenstein).

Regarding Kier, a scan of the late actor was completed in November 2025. When it comes to the late actor’s involvement in the horror game. Kojima Productions declines to share more information on Kier’s involvement.”

When it comes to gameplay, while Kojima can’t really go into specifics, he did confirm that the title OD means to overdose on fear. Not only that, but Kojima confirmed he had the concept for OD since he was working on Death Stranding.  “I wanted to do something new. I wanted to do something different,” Kojima noted. “I had this OD concept since I was working on DS1 [Death Stranding] and I was working on it just by myself. I can’t reveal much detail, but it’s something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system.”

Many People Rejected the OD Concept

Kojima also admitted that he pitched the idea of OD to many people and companies, and that all of them turned him down. “I pitched to many people, to the big companies, and also to the up-and-coming companies. All of them said the same thing,” Kojima recalls. “They said that I’m crazy, and that they really don’t understand the concept — that they will not be able to do it.”

Per Kojima, it was former Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, who understood what he was trying to accomplish. This sentiment is echoed by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who had some very complimentary things to say about Kojima.

Sharma calls it a “deeply moving game. I’ve got great artists and creatives that can pick a great game better than I can, and so I want to give it space, but most importantly, I think it just represents another kind of game.”‘

She further adds that a game like this tells the CEO that Xbox has “not reached the boundary of games…and, therefore, we need to make sure our platform is sufficiently open so more creators and developers can come on board and be successful, because the next Kojima is yet to be known.”

Kojima Productions

When it comes to the game itself, Kojima teased, “I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached. It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can’t say much more, because it’ll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!”

No word on when we’ll actually see gameplay, but Kojima’s statements align with his vision a year ago when he said OD is a game “like no other.” Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long for more info to trickle in regarding this new project.

For some reason, the first screenshot for the game reminds me of P.T. — Kojima’s cancelled take on Silent Hill that was shown off by a playable demo that had people talking about it for months (or even years).

In related news, we uncovered first details regarding Kojima’s Physint tactical espionage game for PlayStation that we think warrants a read.
