Mortal Kombat Movie Sequel Moving Forward, Moon Knight Writer Penning Script

Mortal Kombat Movie

The Mortal Kombat movie sequel is officially moving forward, with Moon Knight series writer Jeremy Slater writing the script for the follow up to last year’s live-action reboot.

First reported by Deadline, New Line Cinema is moving forward with the sequel to last year’s reboot film, which was directed by Simon McQuoid and starring a diverse cast that included Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, and Chin Han. The studio has tapped Slater to write the story for the sequel, with his credits including the 2015 Fantastic Four film reboot, The Exorcist TV series, Netflix’s Umbrella Academy series, and the upcoming Moon Knight series by Marvel Studios that will stream on Disney+ this March.

Based on the popular fighting game series that began life in arcades in 1992, Mortal Kombat was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and tells the story of multiple fighters and warriors who fight in a tournament and are able to deliver finishing moves called fatalities after successfully beating their opponent in a match. The first live-action film released in 1995 was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starred Robin Shou as Liu Kang, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, and Christopher Lambert as Rayden. The film would become a commercial success, but would get a lackluster sequel in 1997 with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which was a failure in the box office. After more than twenty years, the film series was rebooted in 2021 with the new film. which was inspired by the new set of Mortal Kombat games developed by NetherRealm Studios.

While it will be a long wait until we get more details and release date for the Mortal Kombat movie sequel, the video game series is still going strong with Mortal Kombat 11 selling over 12 million units worldwide last year. NetherRealm has stopped support for the game, and moving foward to their next project, which we’re presuming is Mortal Kombat 12.
