Naughty Dog “Moving On” From Uncharted; The Last of Us Part 3 Will Only Be Made If There Is a “Compelling Story”

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Update 1.4

Speaking about his studio’s successes, Neil Druckmann has revealed that Naughty Dog has no plans to create new Uncharted games, with the studio “moving on” from the legendary franchise. Its other franchise The Last of Us is in a similar situation: Druckmann has stated that the creation of The Last of Us Part 3 depends on the studio being able to come up with a “compelling story.”

With a number of massively-successful Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter franchises under its belt, Naughty Dog was acquired by Sony in 2001. The studio followed up its storied legacy with the Uncharted and The Last of Us franchises for PlayStation consoles. However, Druckmann feels that there is no pressure from the parent company for Naughty Dog to continue either series, and that Sony remains supportive of the studio’s desire to “follow its passions.”

(Sony) have supported us every step of the way to follow our passions — meaning that just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel. That’s not the case.

For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.

Additionally, Druckmann does not feel the need to create a sequel to 2018’s The Last of Us Part 2 unless there is a universal, powerful story to be told:

Likewise, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not. Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2, which is if we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.

While Naughty Dog may indeed be in no rush to create the next mainline The Last of Us entry, the franchise is still continuing: a full-scale multiplayer game is in the works, the HBO adaptation of the original title is enjoying critical acclaim, and the studio has teased additional announcements to be made in the summer. PC players will soon be able to pick up the remake of The Last of Us as well, which we found “undoubtedly the best way to experience the first game.”

I sure hope they are. Its nearly 3 years since TLOU Part II came out. Hopefully like TLOU Part 1’s reveal, it will be only 2 months before their next project releases. Its the only positive thing I care about when it comes to TLOU Part 1, the way and how fast it was revealed and released.
